Marvin Brands | Windows into the Future
Overview
Changing the way we see windows by bringing transparency to the home design process. The premium experience for Marvin Brands’ product showroom sought to showcase windows and doors in a way that could make them a key emotional decision rather than an afterthought. In Marvin’s flagship Boston retail space, we leveraged innovative tech grounded in a thoughtful user experience to emulate a modern digital design. The experience forged a new customer journey for homeowners to bring their dreams to life, trading blueprints and hard hats for elegant, intuitive creation.

Why It Mattered
There were many contributors over the years long engagement and much of my role was focused on continuing to evolve the experience. Whether it was working as a team lead to pilot a retail expansion, presenting the work at conferences, or collaborating with IDEO on a related VR project, I was always close to this one. Even if that meant sometimes I was just a guy holding up one end of the table.
Today, the award-winning experience empowers users to design and communicate their vision – a major step for an industry whose products literally impact the view and feel of every room in the house.
Approach
Understanding the process of home building, and the complex relationships between architects, builders, salespeople and homeowners was critical to creating a seamless, frictionless experience. Countless interviews and primary research resulted in a clear customer journey that could guide the user through the design process from start to finish.
Builders and architects were initially resistant to the disruptive approach, but quickly saw the value of bringing homeowners into the conversation.
Mapping a journey that would meet the needs of all 3 user groups was key.
Selections could be further customized throughout the journey
A projection mapping experience allowed customers to refine their final designs and visualize them at scale.
The interactive touch table rendered 3D models in real time.
RFID enabled wood swatches allowed users to unleash their creativity.
To kick off the client's annual forum, we created this video to communicate their vision of seamlessly connecting stakeholders throughout the process.
